How To Do At Home Prom In Style
David Ruff
Prom has earned its place in pop culture as a high-school rite of passage romanticized by every teen movie ever created. As a pop culture obsessed teen, I have always imagined what my prom night would look like: what songs would I be dancing to, who would be my date, and of course — what would I be wearing? Rather than spending a night out dancing with my friends, I will be spending my prom at home because of the pandemic.
However, this did not stop me from creating my prom outfit. I won’t just sit at home “crying in my prom dress”; I want to incorporate the essence and importance of prom in to my daily life before, hopefully, starting college. No, I don’t mean simply wearing the color of cheap fruit punch oddly only found at high-school dances. It’s more than that.
During our high-school years, us teens have look forward to our prom night not just for the glitz and glamour but also for the meaningful memories we would have created. When doing prom at home, it isn’t necessarily about what you wear — it’s about how we incorporate all of those special aspects that we all know and love about prom into our lives. For some, that may mean strutting down the street in your prom suit (and a mask), and for others, that may mean recycling their prom outfits into their regular wardrobes.
I really enjoyed getting dressed up in what I would have worn to prom and dancing around the living room with my parents and brother. I use fashion as a tool for coping and self-expression, and as such, I always challenge myself to think outside of the box when it comes to creating outfits. I thought: what more could I have done to make this at home prom experience stand out? Then I remembered how much I love mixing and matching styles.
When this is all over, or at least when I take walks to the grocery store, I can rock my prom pieces and give them another life instead of letting my outfit collect dust in the closet. Why not wear a statement blazer with a vintage tee and distressed jeans? Maybe even a hoodie paired with your prom pants and white sneakers to elevate a casual look. As we embark on our new normal and the first chapter of adulthood, lets incorporate the prom we never had into our new memories however we can.
